Ferry rider essentials
ReservationsMost US ferry routes are first come, first served. A few take or require a vehicle reservation -- among them the San Juan Islands and Port Townsend runs in Washington and the long island crossings. Your route's page says which.
PayingBuy online ahead or pay at the tollbooth by cash or card. Many routes charge one direction only, and walking on is cheaper than driving on.
Peak seasonSummer and holiday weekends add a vehicle surcharge on many systems and fill first. Mornings and Friday evenings are the crunch.
Bikes and petsBikes usually board first for a small surcharge. Leashed pets ride the car deck or open decks. Check your operator for the specifics.

How do ferry waits work?

There is no wait-time number like an airport. You wait for space on the next sailing, so the question is whether the next boat has room, which the board above shows.

How early should I arrive?

Off-peak, 10 to 15 minutes is plenty. For a Friday evening westbound run, be in the holding lanes 20 to 30 minutes early.

Do I need a reservation?

It depends on the operator. On Washington State Ferries, only the San Juan Islands and Port Townsend routes take vehicle reservations; everything else is first come, first served. Check your route's page for its rule.

Schedules come from the Washington State Ferries (WSDOT) API and each other operator's published GTFS timetable, baked at the last rebuild -- today's sailing times, not a moment-by-moment counter.
